CGNET GateKeeper Achieves Major Improvement in Fighting Spam by Combining Symantec Technologies

Hosted service blocks 99 percent of all Internet-based spam by adding the Symantec TurnTide AntiSpam Router to Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam

MENLO PARK, Calif., January 24, 2005 - CGNET Services International, a global provider of email and network services, announced today that it has achieved unprecedented levels of spam removal while maintaining an extremely low level of genuine messages removed.

Regular measurement of test mailboxes and CGNET's delivery of email to more than 15,000 users has shown that since July, when the production system was cut over to a combination of the Symantec TurnTide AntiSpam Router and Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam, the level of spam captured from the Internet has averaged 99 percent. Prior to the move, when CGNET used only Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam, the average level of spam removed was approximately 93 percent.

The Symantec TurnTide AntiSpam Router added no false positives (good mail incorrectly blocked as spam), resulting in a total rate of false positives below 1 in 10,000 messages.

CGNET's GateKeeper spam- and virus-protection service deters and filters spam before it is delivered to users' email servers. A hosted service, GateKeeper can be easily installed without any local configuration at customers' premises.

"Raising the percentage of spam removed to 99 percent makes a big difference, because even with 93 percent of spam removed, users can still see a lot of spam in their mailboxes," said Ken Novak, Chief Technology Officer at CGNET. Novak also said that adopting the TurnTide AntiSpam Router significantly reduced the load on CGNET's Brightmail AntiSpam servers by throttling down the flow from spammers on the Internet.

Georg Lindsey, president of CGNET, said that innovative services like GateKeeper are typical of the company's level of service. "In the 21 years we've been in business, we've been the first to bring technologies like email and integrated voice and data to several countries. Now we're proud to be the leader in making available the hosted combination of these two great Symantec technologies."

CGNET is a Software Partner in the Symantec Partner Program. Software Partners are security, systems management, and/or storage solutions resellers selling Symantec solutions to small businesses and consumers.
