Installing and Configuring RRAS

RRAS (Routing and Remote Access Server) is an updated version of RAS (Remote Access Server) which adds advanced routing and internetworking capabilities such as routing, remote access, and virtual private network (VPN) capability. RRAS allows users to connect to the server via dial-up. More importantly, RRAS can be used as an emergency backup method of connecting Exchange Servers in the event of a line failure. RRAS is available as a download from Microsoft. After installing RRAS, it is necessary to reapply Service Pack 6a.

Installation

  1. You can download the RRAS installation file from Microsoft, http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/winfeatures/rras/rrasdown.asp

  2. Begin the installation by executing the RRAS installation file.

  3. The installation program will ask you if you have installed Service Pack 3 or greater. Agree to continue the installation.

  4. You will be prompted by "Routing and Remote Access Setup" dialog box to "Choose the components below to install...". Choose all 3 components: Remote Access Service, LAN routing, and Demand Dial Routing.

  5. If the installation program detects that there are no RAS capable devices, it will give you the option to add and configure a device. In most cases, this will be a modem, although an X.25 pad can also be configured as a RAS capable device. It is usually best to add and configure a device at this time even if no device is physically present on the server. Any device can be removed, added or reconfigured at a future time. In the event that you do not know what type of modem will be used for RAS on the server, add any modem such as a Multitech MT2834ZDX.

  6. Follow the prompts for modem installation. The installation program will initiate the standard Windows NT modem installation application. To speed installation, don’t allow NT to detect the modem. When prompted, select “Don’t detect my modem; I will select it from a list.”

  7. Select the modem manufacturer and model.

  8. Select the ports on which the modem will be installed. You can select all ports if several modems will be attached to the server.

  9. Finish the modem setup routine.

  10. You will now be prompted to make an installed modem available to RAS. This is the Add RAS Device dialog box. Select one of the com ports on which a modem was installed and click OK.

  11. You should now be in the Remote Access Setup dialog box. Click the Configure button and configure the modem to Receive calls as RAS Server then click OK.

  12. In the Remote Access Setup dialog box, click the Network button.
    • Select TCP/IP as the protocol.

    • Under Authentication and Encryption Settings, allow any authentication including clear text.

    • Select Windows NT as the authentication method.

  13. In the Remote Access Setup dialog box, click the Continue button to continue with the setup.

  14. Click OK to the setup message and restart the computer when prompted.

  15. Reapply Service Pack 6a.

Be sure to reapply the Service Pack! Your server will most likely Blue Screen if you don't.
