Installing NT Option Pack 4
Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack is a set of extensions to the NT 4.0 OS, including IIS 4.0, Internet Explorer 4.01 and Service Pack 3. It is highly recommended that NT4.0 Option Pack CD be used when installing NT Server. Microsoft recognizes the programs on the Option Pack as officially part of the NT 4.0 operating system. Without this CD, you are not installing the latest version of NT. Of significant importance are the newest versions of IIS and Active Server Pages found on this CD. IIS and ASP have been incorporated into one product.
If you don't have the CD, the Option Pack can be downloaded from http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/NT4OptPk/default.asp

Installation
The first step to installing the Windows NT4.0 Option Pack is to install Windows NT Service Pack 6a.
- Download the Windows NT 4 Service Pack 6a file from Microsoft, http://www.microsoft.com/ntserver/nts/downloads/recommended/SP6/allSP6.asp
- Confirm any file open messages and accept security warnings if necessary.
- Select Run this program from its current location then answer Ok.
- The SP6a files will transfer to the hard drive.
- At the welcome screen select Next.
- Accept the license agreement.
- Select Install the Service Pack.
- Select Create an Uninstall Directory if the server is already in production as a safety precaution. If it is a new server this is not necessary.
- Answer No to All to overwrite newer files. If you are prompted to overwrite the 128-bit security DLL, SCHANNEL.DLL, answer Skip to retain 128-bit encryption.
- Remove CD and restart the computer.
Internet Explorer 5.5
- Install Internet Explorer 5.5 if necessary, following the prompts.
- DO NOT install Internet Explorer 4.01 from the Option Pack CD.
Windows NT4.0 Option Pack
Before you begin, decide which directories the IIS files should be installed in. This would depend on the size of the available partitions. Usually C: is reserved for the OS, and even though Option Pack is part of the OS, you may want to install IIS to a different drive or partition. If the server is also running Exchange, it might be a good idea have one drive or partition for NT4.0, one for Exchange and another for the Internet Information Service files. Note: Exchange or any other non-OS software should never be installed in the same drive or partition as NT4.0.
- Proceed to step 5 of the Option Pack, Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.
- At the File Download dialog box, select Run this program from its current location and click Ok to proceed with the installation.
- Accept the security warning.
- Proceed through the set up dialog box and accept the license.
- Select Custom for type of installation.
- Most of the components needed are pre-selected. Add Internet connection services for RAS by placing a check next to it, if necessary (for setting up just an IIS4 Web and/or FTP server, without Exchange Server, RAS is not necessary)
- You can deselect FrontPage Server Extensions if you wish
- Highlight Internet Information Service (IIS) and click on Show Subcomponents. Deselect SMTP Services. Click OK.
- Specify the directories where the IIS files will go, for example:
- WWW Services - D:\inetpub\wwwroot
- FTP Services - D:\inetpub\ftproot
- Application Installation Point - D:\Program files
- Proceed through the rest of the installation program accepting the defaults or edit the file locations as desired.
- Reboot system after installation is complete.
Re-Apply NT Service Pack 6a
1. Re-apply NT Service Pack 6a.
Be sure to reapply the Service Pack! Your server will most likely Blue Screen if you don't.
