1. General Recommendations on Hardware and Software
General Recommendations on hardware and software, installation considerations, naming conventions, etc. - See Pre-Installation Checklist for NT 4 and Exchange 5.5
2. Installing NT 4.0
- Insert NT setup disk 1 in the floppy drive and the NT Server CD in the CD ROM drive. Then reboot the server to start the installation process.
- Insert NT setup disk 2 upon request and press Enter to continue.
- At the Welcome to Setup screen, press Enter to continue.
- At the screen to select the option for Express or Custom, press C for Custom setup
- Press Enter and let setup detect the hard disk controller type.
- Insert NT setup disk 3 upon request and press Enter to continue.
- Setup recognizes any previous versions of NT. To install a fresh copy, press N.
- Windows NT should determine that the computer has a CD-ROM drive.
- Press Enter to install Windows NT from the CD-ROM.
- At the screen that shows the existing partitions and space available, use the UP and DOWN ARROW keys to ensure that the 1 GB NTFS partition on C is selected and press Enter. If Setup finds FAT partition, delete the FAT partition and initialize NTFS. The first partition should be around 1 or 2 Gig max and the second should be the remaining space.
- Select the option to leave the current file system in place.
- Setup will then examine the hard disks for corruption.
- You should receive a message that this portion of the setup has completed successfully.
- The setup should now be in graphical mode. Fill in the identification prompts, as in example below:
When Setup prompts you with "To Specify additional SCSI adapters, CD ROM, etc"
then, if you need special drivers, such as for a SCSI adapter not provided with NT, enter S to get the drivers from an external source.
Name: CGNET
Company:Services International
Product ID: Leave blank
Language:English (United States), press Enter Twice
3. Licensing and Peripheral Configuration
- For Exchange Server, it’s necessary to set the machine up as a Domain Controller. Note, if you're setting the Server up as a BDC, setup requires that you have a PDC up and running on the network during installation.
- Choose Licensing Per Seat
- Agree that you have read and are bound by the license agreement
- Computer Name: (Important, See Naming Conventions in Pre-Installation Checklist for NT 4 and Exchange 5.5 for NT Server Name)
- Language: English (United States)
- Setup Local Printer: (Optional)
4. Configuring Networking
- Detect the network card, if you can't find it, use "Other".
- In Control Panel, Networking, make sure that the following network protocols are selected and configured:
- Select TCP/IP Transport.
- Deselect Net BEUI Transport
- This is the time to configure your system, such as specific setup options for your NIC cards, printers, etc.
- In Control Panel, Networking, Protocols, go to TCP/IP Protocol Properties. Configure TCP/IP with the correct static address, subnet mask for your class C, and default gateway address. On the DNS tab, leave the domain blank - this can alleviate various routing problems.
- Go to the WINS Address tab. Enable LMHOSTS only. You will need to create an LMHOSTS file using the IP information in the Naming and IP address convention checklist.
5. Other Configuration Options
- In Control Panel, Select current date and time.
- In Control Panel, Select proper Time Zone. Deselect option to automatically adjust for daylight savings time.
- The system should find the VGA compatible display adapter. Bet sure to test it to make sure it displays properly.
- Do Not Create the Emergency Repair Disk yet. Do this later.
- Reboot Server and check the event log for errors.
6. Setting Up RRAS and Dial-Up Networking
It is important to install Routing and Remote Access Service for backup connectivity purposes. See Installing Routing and Remote Access Server and Dial-Up Networking for instructions.
7. NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a and IIS (NT 4.0 Option Pack)
We highly recommend installing Option Pack 4.0. The newest versions of IIS and Active Server pages are included with the Option Pack. It is essential, when using the Option Pack, to install the hot fix, as described in the following Option Pack 4.0 document. See Installing NT Option Pack 4.0 for instructions. Note that you can only install Outlook Web Access if you first have installed IIS and Active Server Pages.
8. Creating Service Accounts
- Create the following three account in the Domain: ExchAdmin, ExchService, and a Site Connector account (named xxxxxSC, where "xxxxx" is your Exchange Site name as specified in the naming conventions given:
Go to Administrative Tools, User Manager. Click On User / New User.
Username: ExchAdmin
Full Name: Exchange Administrator
Description:
Password: XXXXXXXXX
Password: XXXXXXXXX
- Remove User Must Change Password at Next Logon.
- Select User Cannot Change Password
- Password Never Expires.
- Groups: Add to Domain Admins and Administrator Group
- Repeat the above for the Exchange Service Account and the Site Connector Account.
- In User Manager for Domains, also click on Dialin, and select "Grant Dialin Permission to User" for all of the above user accounts. You are now ready to install Exchange.
- Reminder - it's important that ONLY NT is installed on the C Drive. Avoid installing other software there.
